Comment Moderation Without Burning Out
A sustainable system for handling hate, spam, and overwhelm — without giving up on having an open comment section.
Comment sections are exhausting. The negativity bias is real — one cruel comment lingers longer than fifty kind ones — and creators who don't build a system end up either burned out or numbed out. Neither is sustainable. Here's a system that works.
Separate moderation from engagement
These are two different jobs and they need different mental modes. Moderation is triage: delete, hide, ban. Engagement is connection: reply, heart, converse. Doing both in the same sitting drains you twice. Block out separate time for each.
Use the platform's tools
Every major platform now has keyword filters, comment hold for review, and automatic spam detection. Spend an afternoon configuring them properly. A well-tuned filter catches 80% of the worst comments before you ever see them.
The 24-hour rule for hard comments
When a comment really gets under your skin, don't reply immediately. Note it, walk away, and come back in 24 hours. Half the time you'll realize it wasn't worth the energy. The other half, you'll respond with the clarity that only distance gives.
Outsource when it makes sense
Once you're past a certain volume, hiring a moderator is one of the highest-ROI moves a creator can make. The cost is small relative to the cognitive bandwidth you reclaim. Train them on your tone, give them clear rules, and trust them.
Protect the comment section anyway
It's tempting to close comments entirely. Don't, unless you have to. The comment section is one of the most important growth and feedback channels you have. The goal is to make it sustainable, not to abandon it.
